In 2007, 30 Wood Bison were killed by vehicle collisions. Highway 3, the Yellowknife Highway, the only road to Yellowknife, runs right through the middle of the core range for the Mackenzie Herd. In the Nordquist Herd, vehicle collisions are the primary cause of Wood Bison mortality. In March 1996, less than one year after reintroduction, the Etthithun Lake herd suffered 20% mortality, when 3 out of 15 animals were killed by collisions with vehicles. One consequence of the reintroduction of Wood Bison to the Canadian northwestern boreal forest is that several reintroduced herds have suffered significant mortality caused by vehicle collisions.
